Dresses and skirts my 1 year journey

What is cooking in my oven of Faith? Where do I begin? How do I describe this journey? Well…….  I want to wear dresses and skirts no pants no shorts, for 1 year to see where the Lord leads me.  I grew up Apostolic/Pentecostal in California. In California women/girls always respected the house of God, the Sanctuary by coming to church in a dress or skirt. We were taught not to be a distraction. (form fitting clothes, jeans, pants even some tank tops, spark the eye gate that leads to lust)

Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

If you know certain pieces of clothing are a weakness for some brothers in the church, you look out for your fellow brother by not wearing them.  When you are in church you are there for the Lord, to learn,  to worship and praise the Lord, not to be a distraction by trying to be sexy. Of course in this day 2015, EVERYBODY wants to be appealing, and it seems the sexy route is the way. (I can’t stand to be called sexy btw) makes me want to throw up in my mouth! LOL Anyway, dresses and skirts ONLY, outside of the church  was NOT enforced. It was not a big deal for women to wear pants or shorts at home, or out and about, you just didn’t wear them to church.  As long as you are modest in your apparel, it didn’t matter if you are wearing pants, skirt, or a dress.

Biblically it says in 1 Timothy 2:9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire. It does not specifically say women should only wear dresses and skirts.

My family and I now live in Texas, and here the women of the Apostolic/Pentecostal faith, ONLY wear dresses and skirts EVERYDAY! If the women are outside painting the house or doing yard work or organizing the garage, they are doing so in a DRESS or SKIRT.  I respect the women for going all the way with the dress/skirt but at the same time I think it is utterly ridiculous! This is the beginning of my journey, so I will be COMPETELY HONEST of how I feel. (If you only wear dresses or skirts please do not be offended by my lack of understanding as of today.)  I totally believe in modesty, I just don’t think a dress or skirt is the only attire that makes one modest. I’ve seen plenty of women “look holy” modest,  but their heart showed contrary. God is looking at ours hearts and he is weighing motives.  1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

I will say, this is definitely a challenge for me because I don’t believe you have to wear a dress/skirt as a woman in order to be considered modest. But, in order for me to gain a better understanding I want to walk in the shoes of the modest dress or skirt for a year! I do believe the Lord will open door after door of enlightenment for me as the days pass with me in a dress or skirt. Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. This will be part of my living sacrifice and spiritual worship of 2015/2016.

I  pray I am enlightened abundantly with wisdom, knowledge and understanding concerning modesty in dresses and skirts. I pray you reading are enlightened as I am and vice versa!

  1. my initial feelings are similar to yours – outside of church, there is a different standard. However, I am excited for your journey and sacrifice for a full year. That level of hunger and thirst for righteousness is exemplary.

    Thank you Faith.

  3. […] So it has been about 8 months since I began wearing skirts and dresses ONLY!  If you read my first blog about it I said I’d keep you posted on how things are going.  I haven’t kept you updated, for 1)… I was trying to gather my thoughts because I feel like I am gaining and learning so much from this experience in my womanhood and 2) I was being lazy with my writing responsibility and didn’t think people cared that much, but a couple of y’all have sent me messages asking how it’s going and what I’ve learned.  If you have not read the blog here’s the link https://faithsoven.com/2015/04/08/dresses-and-skirts-my-1-year-journey/ […]
