Never did I think I’d be writing about Easter the day before Resurrection Sunday. This was on my mind so heavy last night, so let me think out loud. LITERALLY.. Growing up we referred to Easter Sunday as Resurrection Day! Most of the people we went to church with would greet you with “Happy Resurrection Day”, did we say Easter here and there, yes, do we still say it till this day, absolutely, but we knew what we meant. We KNEW that we were celebrating our risen Savior. We knew Jesus went to the cross, died for our filthy sins and came back to life three days later so that we may have life.
My question is where in the world did the term Easter come from? And why in the world is the term Easter used in reference to my Great God? Don’t let me stop there, the bunny and the eggs, what does any of that have to do with my God dying and rising for me? For us? I’d like to say for the past couple of years I have suppressed these thoughts. I think it and just tell myself, I’ll just continue to say “Happy Resurrection Sunday” but is that enough?
Is God looking at me crazy because I have these questions but I haven’t addressed them? Is he looking at me crazy because I’ve gone along with Western culture/tradition? Part of that tradition is a good egg/scavenger hunt! I mean who doesn’t enjoy a great hunt? I have my own kids now, no we don’t go and buy a bunch of fancy clothes for Resurrection Sunday, no we don’t buy our kids big ol baskets full of toys and candy, they have no clue about the baskets, but we (my husband and I) are so guilty of letting them participate in a fun egg hunt. My entire block gets involved. Are we the mean parents if we say “no, you can’t go on the egg hunt, that’s pagan.”
I wholeheartedly believe church and teaching begins at home. I teach my children about who Jesus Christ is to them, who he is to the world. I teach them how He died and rose again for us. My older two have the understanding. So are we wrong if we let them participate in a egg/scavenger hunt, even if we have explained to them that the egg hunt has nothing to do with Jesus dying for them?
I guess it concerns me because, if we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every year, and on the same day we are celebrating Him, we have an egg hunt, will that cause confusion???? I then remember back to myself as a kid. My mom and dad bought us baskets cooked a hearty meal and all that good stuff, but… on the contrary my mom is a GREAT teacher. I am a full adult and there is no confusion about what Resurrection Sunday is to me. Gods resurrection is not only celebrated on that certain Sunday in March or April. There are things, traditions all around us, and some things I am totally against, but if we are doing our part as their first teacher, then there will be no confusion.
I write all this to say “TEACH” make sure you are teaching your children about the light of the world, Jesus Christ who is God! He said to DILIGENTLY teach them about Him.
Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
I pray anyone who reads this implements telling your children about God “our light” in this dark world… tell them and teach it to them so they understand. Teach Him morning, noon and night! Don’t leave it to the Sunday school teacher or the Pastor, it’s our job as parents to tell them. In Jesus name Amen!
